From geographical, economic, educational, political and cultural point of view, Ljubljana is the heart of Slovenia. It is a charming city, a mixture of Central European characters with a unique touch. Ljubljana is modern and traditional at the same time, rich in architecture and culture. Major influences of the historic centre were Art Nouveau and Baroque and the combination makes Ljubljana so special and differentiates it from other European cities. Its Slovenian touch was given to her by Joze Plecnik, our world famous architect, with his many breathtaking masterpieces.
Ljubljana was named after Ljubljanica, the river that flows through the city. It is a friendly, middle sized capital offering everything that each metropolis should offer, but still keeping the relaxed atmosphere. Ljubljana's ambience, numerous bars, street cafés, restaurants, frenetic program of performances, events and more, attract people into a traffic-free city centre. People enjoy being outside which makes streets of Ljubljana lively, especially on Saturdays and Sundays when food and antique markets are opened and locals meet for a chat with friends or a morning coffee.
For people of Ljubljana culture is a part of everyday life, it is a way of living. Ljubljana gives them over 10.000 cultural events each year and it is also known by its numerous museums, galleries and theatres and one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world.
Not only that Ljubljana is one of the safest capitals, it is also very clean and one of the greenest in the world.
What is also amazing is that in 20 years old country there is over six millenniums of history.
