Slovenia is becoming one of the leaders in sustainable tourism in Europe. Extensive forests, green areas, inland waters, diverse landscape and incredible natural beauty are a great base for sustainable economy. In times of world's climate changes it is even more vital to act green and protect these exceptional riches and conserve them for future generations. The future is in sustainability.
Tourism in Slovenia is very closely connected with nature and has number of reasons to push sustainable tourism. 12% of the country are protected natural areas, 35% is protected by "Natura 2000" (protected area of European importance) and 60% of Slovenia are forests (several preserved original forest reserves), hiking paths and trails that each visitor can enjoy. There are over 22.500 plant and animal species that form one of the highest levels of biological diversities in Europe. It might also be surprising that Slovenia has some of the purest drinking water in the world.
In Slovenia, green is a dominant colour. It expresses the balance between the tranquillity of nature and the perseverance of the Slovenian people. It speaks of unspoiled nature and the dedication to keep it that way. It symbolizes a balanced lifestyle that combines the Slovenians' unstoppable zest for life with a shared vision for the future, hand in hand with nature.
Since 2008 Slovenia has also been a project partner of European Commission to develop and promote sustainable tourism.
